Who was (is) your childhood sports hero and why?

Question by AZCardsfan: Who was (is) your childhood sports hero and why?
Mine were David Robinson and Bo Jackson. When David Robinson was in his rookie year with the Spurs, I was in 2nd grade. I sent him a letter and a card and he returned the card autographed with a handwritten note to me. I was a fan ever since. What a great guy. I also met Bo Jackson in Spring Training one time – to this day it was one of the highlights of my life. How about your childhood sports heroes?

Diego Maradona – his goal against England in World Cup 1986 is simply the greatest goal ever scored; he destroyed the greatest defence in football at that time.

Though I was only 8 months old when he scored the goal, Ive been a fan ever since I saw that great goal!!

How do you verify an autograph for authenticity?

Question by mojopin79: How do you verify an autograph for authenticity?
I have an autograph of a very famous sports person, and I am considering selling it. How would I know if I was getting a genuine autograph and not a forgery? The particular autograph I am speaking of would not be difficult to forge as it is quite simple.

Best answer:

Answer by ttpawpaw
The best way is to have a picture of the person signing it while you are also holding it. Since it is easy to forge, how do you know it is real? Unless it is backed by a certificate of authenticity from a reputable company it will be suspect. You also have to be suspect about any certificate of authenticity. How do I know that this is really you asking the question.pp

What do you think? Answer below!

January 26, 2008 #026/366 (Saturday)

Today was the 25th anniversary of Bear Bryant’s death. I went to Elmwood Cemetery where he is buried to pay my respects. I’m sure to people from outside of Alabama (and especially to those outside of the South) that visiting the grave of a football coach on his death anniversary is a bit insane. The man had a five mile long, 300 vehicle funeral procession and an estimated 250,000 people lined the streets to witness the procession.

I was only six years old when he passed away, but even then…at such a young age, I realized how much he meant to my family and to many adults in the state. I never saw him coach in person, but I remember watching his TV shows on Sunday afternoons with my dad. I remember the autographed picture my grandmother had of him in her den that my grandfather got her because he was a barber and cut the hair of one of guys in Coach Bryant’s security detail.

While this may seem peculiar to you all, I encourage you to read Ray Melick’s article in today’s Birmingham News to read about why he was more than a football coach to the people of my state. Some historians have referred to him as the most significant person in Alabama in the 20th Century. Auburn University professor Wayne Flint had this to say about Coach Bryant in contrast to segregationist governor George Wallace:

"Bear saw success in terms of adapting and modifying. George Wallace saw it by digging in his heels and not giving an inch. I think the great failures of the 1960s and’70s in Alabama were in educational and religious leadership, and the great successes were in our sports and military.

"Leadership in this state didn’t come from where it should have come from, from education and religion. It came from sports."

To put it in incredibly simple terms…Paul "Bear" Bryant gave Alabamians something to be proud of when there wasn’t anything else for them to be proud of. When the government was wrecking the state and dragging its name through the mud, Coach Bryant helped the state develop a positive self image. We might have sucked at everything else during that time, but we were kings of football during the 60s and 70s as evidenced by the six national championships he won.

There were many people passing by the grave while I was there today. All kept a solemn mood and merely nodded at one another as they came and went from the grave site.

again there are monks, though they are out numbered by the tourisits.

It was just after here that I met som Koreans from Australia. They came from parramatta and were in Korea for some sporting meeting. You could tell they were from Australia as they had Australia written on the backs of the blazers.

Also, one of the groups of school children I had talked to up the hill desceneded on me and I must have signed 20 autograph books. (well school books pressed into the extra service.) The people from parramatte were astonished. Thier teachers happy that I took it all so well.

Why Pro sports players wont autographing my cards?

Question by : Why Pro sports players wont autographing my cards?
I am so upset how baseball players, football players, and basketball players that will not autographing on my rookies cards I had ask them to autographing with a nice letter. All they was doing are send poster card, with their autographing on it and return my rookies card to me with no autographing on it. I am so upset because I have no job and it had been very hard to find a job so I thought I had my all rookies cards with autographing would help meet my income needs but it dont happen. Any idea why they wont sign on rookies cards? Is rich make sure people stay poor?

Best answer:

Answer by Yankees Beast
They dont want people making money off of their merchandise when they dont get a piece of the action. This is mainly for adults that want items autographed. If a kid walked up to them in person, they probably wouldn’t hesitate to sign. But it depends on the player and their mood at the time.

Question by Stupid Flanders: Collectors – What is the most reputable Autograph Authentication service?
I am not a collector, but have something that has been autographed by a famous sports star and I want to have it authenticated in case I decide to sell it.
Is there a company that is prominently known as being better than others, amoung collectors?

There are tons on the internet and they all say they are the best. How do I know who is legit and who is full of it?

Thanks.
